A gathering of Dunlin – These Dunlins seemed to be resting before continuing to look for dinner. The late afternoon sun cast wonderful shadows of their small bodies.

Resting Dunlin – As we drove along the Padre Island National Seashore we encountered many Dunlin. This resting Dunlin was taking a break after an afternoon of chasing the surf and probing the sand for food.
Taking a Break – This Dunlin seemed to be taking a break from all the action along the beach at Padre Island National Seashore. It was fun to watch these birds balance on one leg and tuck their beaks into their feathers and just relax.
Short-billed Dowitcher – While at Padre Island National Seashore on a late afternoon drive we came upon this Short-billed Dowitcher who was part of a group working the beach in search of dinner.
Waiting For Breakfast On A Rainy Day – This Green Heron acted as though he was waiting for breakfast at Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center in Port Aransas, Texas.
Ruddy Duck Grooming – As the Ruddy Duck groomed, it appeared to the casual observer that he was sort of swimming around in circles and not getting much done. While in fact, he was doing a very thorough job of maintaining the water repellent and insulating nature of his feathers.
Lone Ruddy Duck – This Ruddy Duck spent several minutes grooming himself in a pond on Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center in Port Aransas, Texas. It was fun to watch him splash around and painstakingly oil and then smooth each feather.
Feathers Just Feathers – I was taken by the coloring and detail in the feathers of the male Ruddy Duck. In post-processing, I made the rare decision to crop most of the image out leaving only the side and wing feathers. While the bird is not visible, many people would be able to identify this …
Tricolored Heron – On a rainy morning at Leoneabelle Turnbull Birding Center, this Tricolored Heron with its matted down outer feathers was trying to make a living in the pond. I found the texture of the wet feathers to be quite interesting.
