American Goldfinch

American Goldfinch

This photo was taken on a rainy day in April. A close look at this bird’s head reveals a raindrop that has yet to run off.

I listed this as a male American Goldfinch based on all the normal attributes of the male of the species, except there is no black cap.

Normally, by the date of this photo, most of the male Goldfinches are in full breeding plumage. A few days after I took the series of photos of this bird, I had the great opportunity to photograph one with a full black cap.

The American Goldfinches that frequent our feeders will eat nearly everything we put out. For reasons we do not understand, they refuse to eat thistle, a mainstay in their diet.
