Galapagos Giant Tortoise

Old male Giant Tortoise at the Highlands on Santa Cruz Island.

The Galapagos Giant Tortoises can live to be well over 100 years old. Our naturalist guide told us this one is over 100 years old and possibly as much as 125 years old. This species can weigh up to 1000 pounds and grow between four and six feet long. While I kept my distance from this fellow, he appeared to be on the upper end of the length scale. The males, and this is a male pictured here, are 2-3 times the size of the females. As we walked in search of the Galapagos Giant Tortoises, we heard this loud billowy noise. Our guide informed us that it was the sound of a mating male. I share this here because the next photo is of the pair mating. While this may be offensive to some, I assure you my purpose for including the image is to highlight the difference in size between males and females. I would also note that the sexual organs are not visible in any of my photos.
