One of Many Male House Finches

House Finch

We have a large community of House Finches that visit our feeders regularly.

This male frequently shows off his bright colors while awaiting his turn at our feeders.

The House Finch species has been affected by a disease similar to conjunctivitis in humans, although far more serious. Sadly, we have seen several that have lost sight in one eye. Those were living their last days when they found our feeders. Nothing can be done for the affected individuals. When a diseased bird is seen on a feeder, all the feeders come down, get emptied, and sanitized to help reduce the spread of disease. In 2023, we had our feeders down more than up because even after several days of no feeders, when we put them back out, diseased birds, House Finch, were seen within a day or two.
